In the Austrian squad for the World Championships in Budapest Bernadette Graf is selected for the category U78kg. Also on the team will be 37-year-old Sabrina Filzmoser.

Graf is now ranked higher U78kg than in U70kg. She had not fought since the Olympic Games and made her comeback at the European Open in Bucharest where she won U78kg and at the Grand Prix in Hohhot capturing gold again. This is a luxurious situation for coach Marko Spittka, who didn’t chose to select anyone U70kg and leaves a question mark until the evening of the draw. Graf never touched the 78kg and is way lighter than her opponents, so under normal circumstances U70kg is the aim, but the Innsbrucker appears to be going for the U78kg category in Budapest.

Filzmoser, made her comeback at the Grand Prix in Cancun and the bronze was quite a stunt. Filzmoser never indicated that she would retired and will give it another try. She won world bronze medals in 2005 and 2010. She debuted at world level in 1999 in Birmingham…last century. In her category U57kg she is not the only veteran: Miryam Roper, Telma Monteiro, and Marti Malloy are all older than 30 and heading for the World Championships in this category.

Watch the selection for the World Championships:

-57: Sabrina Filzmoser

-63: Kathrin Unterwurzacher, Magdalena Krssakova

-78: Bernadette Graf

-73: Lukas Reiter

-100: Aaron Fara, Laurin Böhler

+100: Daniel Allerstorfer, Stephan Hegyi
