New Sports Director Sara Alvarez of Spain will use experienced former judoka at the highest level for her new coaching staff. Alvarez was interviewed by Gabi Juan of HajimeJudo.com last weekend where she unveiled part of her strategy in the road to Tokyo 2020.

Alvarez who started coaching as cadet coach in 2010 set new goals, just like her cadet starting period, now for senior level. But first the structure has to be improved. Taking the benefits of existing good parts and remove negative points. Then she will start thinking about medals.
"On one hand I see the future with enthusiasm and on the other hand with concern, because I have the desire and I want to work hard so that all Spanish athletes have a little easier, so that all that effort, and all that delivery, and all those years of training, to facilitate the possibility of reaching many good moments and many medals in a more fluid way."
"I defined some goals for the first year, define some structures, start working with a large group of people, both at technical level and above all at the level of athletes. I also aim to create synergies to the particular coaches, planners, physio, people who are working day to day with athletes, who have the perception that we are there to help them."
In the medium term is defining the equipment that can be classified for the games of Tokyo 2020, and then immediately in what we have to think is in the medals, which is the goal of high performance sports. I was used to medals, I experienced success and medals are the goal of course. But we have to start thinking about everything else, making things easy for the athlete, creating a national team feeling again. That all this structured ... and from there, start thinking about the medals."
