Category U90kg had most ippon scores at Olympic Games

The category U90kg had the most ippon scores, 74% of the matches. Mashu Baker had 4 ippon scores, the final was decided by one yuko. The division U60 had just had 47% ippon scores. In the women’s tournament the category +78kg scored best with 70% and U57kg with just 35% of the matches decided by ippon. Kayla Harrison won all her four fights by ippon.

In total 432 contests were battled out at the Olympic Games. Most fights U60, U73 and U90kg with all 38 contests. This tournament 8 hansokumake were given, 4 for the men, 4 for the women. Both lightweight categories U48kg and U60kg two direct disqualifications were given, most for leg grabbing and usually by less experienced athletes.

In the men’s tournament exactly 500 shidos were given, in 258 contests. In the women’s tournament 204 shidos in 174 contests, fewer than in the men’s events.
