Megumi Tachimoto is vice world champion 2015. Tachimoto won four World Championships bronze medals in 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2014. She won the World Junior Championships in 2008 in Bangkok. Tachimoto won the Grand Slam Paris 3 times as well as Tokyo GS (3), Moscow (2) and Rio (1). 13 GS medals: record. She won silver at the Grand Prix in Düsseldorf in 2017.

Two top level athletes were in the final of the Grand Prix: Beka Gviniashvili and Khusen Khalmurzaev. Almost a year ago both won the Grand Prix in Samsun in different weight categories; now, both competitors stepped onto the tatami at U90kg. Their last encounter was in 2012 at European Junior Championships when the Georgian won the contest. As it happened, the 2017 edition of their matchup left the judo fans as winner, as well. Budapest Grand Prix bronze medallist Iryna Kindzerska (UKR) defeated five-time world medallist Tachimoto Megumi (JPN) to make sure that her country’s only medal in Germany was of the golden variety. World number 24 Tachimoto, 28, was making her return from a lengthy injury lay-off and that showed as the 25-year-old Ukrainian, who was fifth at the London 2012 Olympics, drove over the accomplished Japanese heavyweight in golden score with a tani-otoshi for a match-winning waza-ari score and her first Grand Prix gold prize. Kanae Yamabe downed rival Megumi Tachimoto for her third national judo championship title on Sunday to clinch a spot in this summer’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics. In the pair’s third meeting in the final at the national championships in as many years, and this year serving as the final qualifier for Rio in the +78kg category, holder Tachimoto injured her left knee with under a minute remaining. Some big surprises at the All Japan Championships this weekend in Fukuoka. In the men’s U90kg Daiki Nishiyama defeated Mashu Baker. Baker is the World Championships bronze medallist of Astana in 2015. Baker is ranked 4th in the World Ranking, Nishiyama 11th, so a decision has to be made by the technical staff of the All Japan Judo Federation. Read more

Asian athletes do not even surprise with 9 titles in Paris

Japan topped the medal table once again in Paris as they won five gold medals, two silver and two bronze ahead of South Korea who shone with three gold and four bronze medals while hosts France won two gold medals, one silver and six bronze. On Sunday Asia added another four gold medals to Saturday's five. Europe doubled two on Sunday and Pan America claimed gold U78kg their strongest category. Read more
