At 25, Roland Cambier discovered judo and founded club Roeselare in the '50s. In 1959 and became trainer and joined the Belgian Judo Federation in 1962. Cambier helped establish judo clubs in South-West Flanders, including Ingelmunster, Izegem, and Tielt. He also supported clubs in Moorslede, Ingelmunster, and Ronse. In 1963, he became the Belgian champion in the 2nd dan category. Cambier's students also became Belgian champions. After retiring from competition, he became a successful international referee. Cambier achieved 9th dan in 2015, one of the few Belgians with such a high rank.
